Men's Lacrosse Notches Second Straight Victory, Tops Plymouth State

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team picked up its second straight win on Sunday afternoon with a 13-5 final over Plymouth State University in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field.

Senior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) led the way for the Colonels with five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore Matthew Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) tossed in four points on two goals and two assists. Juniors Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) and Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) registered hat tricks while junior Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) finished with two markers on the afternoon. Sophomore Clinton Wilson (Freehold, N.J.) was the final Curry student-athlete to find the scoring column with one goal.

Five different Panthers found the back of the net to lead Plymouth State (1-2 overall). Senior Jake Burns (Salem, N.H.) pitched in a pair of assists to pace the Panthers.

The Colonels never trailed in the contest and the game was only tied once. Scahill put Curry on the board with a marker 10:25 into the first quarter. Plymouth State answered back with a goal at the 8:33 mark with a goal from senior Chris Waterbury (Clinton, Conn.). The helper was awarded to Burns. The Colonels broke the tie as Newell fired a shot past Panther goalie Zel Kerkel (Loudon, N.H.) to put Curry up 2-1. The goal was assisted by Scahill.

The Colonels shut out Plymouth State in the second quarter while scoring three times. Stebbins started the run with a goal off a pass from junior Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) with 3:43 remaining in the half to push the score to 3-1. Curry netted another less than 90 seconds later on a goal from Ton with the assist going to Newell. The Colonels scored its final marker on the frame on a goal from Newell off a pass from Scahill with three seconds remaining to send Curry into the half with a 5-1 advantage.  

The squads came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, combining for 10 goals. Ton and junior Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) notched the opening two markers for the Colonels to extend the lead to 7-1. Plymouth State responded with two of their own, one apiece from senior Kyle Day (Hampton, N.H.) and sophomore Chase Mercier (Boscawen, N.H.) to keep the game in reach with a 7-3 score. Another two-goal spurt followed just 23 seconds later on a marker from Stebbins and the second from Fallon to push the score to 9-3. The teams traded the final four goals of the frame, with each side scoring twice. Seniors Casey Elkins (Stow, Mass.) and Paul Luongo (Northborough, Mass.) tallied goals for the Panthers while Wilson and Scahill scored for the Colonels.

Curry tacked on two goals in the final quarter to make the final score 13-5. Ton capped off his hat trick with a man-up marker with 12:06 to go in regulation. Fallon also completed his hat trick with a goal at the 6:27 mark off a feed from senior Kyle Lussier (Topsham, Maine).

Curry outshot Plymouth State 52-32 for the contest. Senior goalie Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) was credited with the win for the Colonels, recording five saves in the first half. Freshman Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) turned away seven shots in the final 30 minutes. Kerkel finished with 11 saves for the Panthers in the loss.

Curry (3-3 overall) will next play at Clark University on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. Plymouth State returns to action at Wheaton on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
