Colonels edge Cadets 11-10 on Friday in a Non-Conference Battle

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Colonels held off a late surge by the Norwich University Cadets, securing an 11-10 victory on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Jeffery Yates (Albany, N.Y) led the way for the Colonels, netting three goals and also dishing out two assists.

The Colonels got on the board five and a half minutes in when Sophomore Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) found Yates in front of the Norwich goal. Two minutes later, Junior Brandon Flaim (Pembroke, Mass.) buried a pass from Senior Joe Shea (Arlington, Mass.) into the back of the twine to extend the lead to 2-0. Norwich answered quickly when Ryan McCarthy netted his first of four goals on the day. Curry responded by netting the next three goals, back-to-back goals by Yates and a goal from Junior Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.).

Curry opened up the second quarter scoring three straight goals to extend the lead to 8-2. Norwich capitalized on a man up advantage with Jimmy Ward finding the back of the net. The Colonels and the Cadets traded goals back and forth to end the first half of play.

Norwich struck first in the third quarter 2:15 seconds in on a goal by Josh Jenkins. Curry and Norwich traded possession for most of the quarter, until Norwich found the back of the net again when McCarthy netted his second of the game. McCarthy added two more goals at the start of the fourth quarter, bringing his total to four on the day. Marcella finally broke the Colonels goalless streak with 3:42 remaining in the game. This would be the game winning goal as the Cadets scored two more times to bring the final score to 11-10.

The Cadets Ian Kriger took the loss on the day. He faced 26 shots, making 11 saves. Junior Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) earned the victory in net for the Colonels, facing 18 shots, making 8 saves. Sophomore Steven Grogan continued his dominance at the faceoff dot, securing 20-25 face-offs on the day.
