Men's Lacrosse Downs Mitchell College, 15-6 in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. –Curry College defeated Mitchell College 15-6, in men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon in Milton, Mass.  With the win, the Colonels earn their first season win and improve to 1-0 overall, while the Mariners fell to 0-1 overall.

Curry came out strong to start the game, taking a 5-0 lead in the first quarter.  The first goal came just 1:33 into play.  Sophomore John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) netted his first of four goals on the night off an assist by junior Connor Arnold (Clifton Park, N.Y.).  Under three minutes later senior Andrew Navoni (Natick, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal.  The Colonels went on to tally three more in the last four minutes of the quarter.  Solid play by senior goaltender Tim McGonagle (Concord, Mass.) held the Mariners scoreless making four stops.  Castellano earned one more goal while assisting on three.  Sophomore Connor McKeon (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored back-to-back and finished the game with four total. 

The second quarter saw Curry outscore Mitchell 3-1 to head into the half with a demanding 8-1 lead.  McKeon netted the first two before the Mariners got on the board.  At the 10:30 minute mark, Mitchell’s junior Demetre Lyras (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored his first of two on the afternoon.  The Colonels answered back before time ran out when senior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.) scored unassisted.  McGonagle made seven saves in the first 30 minutes of play while the Mariners junior netminder Peter Eshenfelder (Quaker Hills, Conn.) stopped six in between the pipes. 

Mitchell opened up the scoring to start the second half on an unassisted tally by sophomore Jordan Cook (Groton, Conn.), his first of two for his team.  Curry however got two more of scores by Castellano and McKeon.  McKeon’s goal came with just two seconds showing on the clock off an assist by Castellano.  The Colonels outshot the Mariners 12-7.

Freshman Timothy McNair (Wilmette, Ill.) replaced McGonagle in net to start the final period.  Nine total goals were scored in the final 15 minutes of play, five for Curry and four for Mitchell.  The Mariners scored first off a net by Cook, unassisted.  Castellano tallied next for his fourth and final of the game.  Natale received his second and three different players for the Colonels each earned goals for the 15-6 victory.  Arnold and sophomores Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) and Sean Ahern (Natick, Mass.) each had one.  For the Mariners, Cook and Lyras each scored one for their seconds respectively and sophomores David Klapp (Greenfield, N.Y.) and Tyler Kradas (Kensington, Conn.) earned their first goals on the season. 

Curry was led by Castellano who finished with eight points on four goals and four assists.  Lyras led for Mitchell with two goals and one assist for three total points. 

The Colonels outshot the Mariners 43-26.  Curry also picked up 39 groundballs and Mitchell 28.  On face-offs, the Colonels went 14-24 and the Mariners 10-24.

McGonagle earned the win in net making 12 saves in 49:07 minutes of play allowing just two goals.  McNair let up four goals, making two stops in 10:53 minutes.  Eshenfelder made 15 saves in goal for Mitchell in the loss.

Curry will travel to Mount Ida College on Saturday, March 2 for a at 1:00 p.m. game start.  Mitchell will host Becker on Saturday, March 2 also for a 1:00 p.m. start.
