Men's Lacrosse Downs TCCC Rival UNE 12-8

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Evan Hammersley (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals and classmate Michael Hibbard (North Chelmsford, Mass.) made 10 of his 16 saves in the second half to help propel Curry College to a 12-8 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse action Monday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Hammersley added a pair of assists to finish with seven points for the Colonels (7-3, 3-1 TCCC), who won for the fifth time in their last six starts. Senior Paul Marchese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored three times, while sophomore Russell Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) added two goals and two helpers.

First-year Tyler Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) led the Nor'easters with four goals and two assists. Junior Michael Woods (Kittery Point, Maine) chipped in a goal and four assists. Sophomore goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) stopped 10 shots between the pipes.

After the Nor'easters established a 3-1 lead seven minutes into the contest, the Colonels reeled off four consecutive tallies to lead 5-3 after one. Hammersley scored three of Curry's five goals in the frame.

UNE would score three of the first markers of the second quarter to even the score (6-6), then the two teams swapped goals before Marchese scored with 17 seconds remaining in the half to give the visitors an 8-7 cushion heading into intermission.

A Tim Margiotta (Randolph, N.J.) goal 19 seconds into the third drew UNE back even yet again, but Lanham notched the eventual game-winner at the 11:44 mark to give Curry a 9-8 lead. The Colonels would add three unanswered markers in the final frame to pull away.

Senior defender Zachary Cavanaugh (Marshfield, Mass.) scooped up 12 ground balls and was credited with four caused turnovers to help Curry overcome 13 penalties leading to six Big Blue man-up goals.

Graduate student Eric Santos (Jamestown, R.I.) led UNE with seven ground balls and was 8-for-13 on faceoffs.

Curry returns to play Wednesday when Wentworth Institute of Technology heads to Milton, Mass. for a 4 p.m. TCCC game.

The Nor'easters (4-6, 1-4) will look to snap their four-game skid when they head to Endicott College for a 4 p.m. start that same afternoon.
