Hammersley Scores Four Goals as the Men's Lacrosse Team Defeats Clark 13-8

MILTON, Mass. – Sophomore Evan Hammersley scores four goals to lead Curry past visiting Clark University 13-8 in non-conference play on Wednesday in Milton. The Colonels improve their record to 3-2 while Clark falls to 0-3.

The first quarter of the game saw both teams with possessions and a number of scoring chance, but it took until 3:07 remaining in the first quarter for the scoreless tie to be broken.  Evan Hammersley was able to put Curry on the scoreboard first, with his first goal of the game. At the end of the first quarter Curry lead 1-0.

Action picked up in the second quarter as Hammersley scored his second goal of the game at 9:33.  Senior Chris Adams (Bradford, NH) answered with two goals at 8:16 and 6:24 to tie the game 2-2, halfway through the second quarter.  Momentum then shifted back to Curry as sophomores Russell Lanham and Sean Gallagher each scored.  At halftime Curry held a 4-2 lead.

Curry came out of halftime on fire as they were able to stretch their two goal lead to a six goal lead. Clark however would not go away, they were able to chip away at Curry’s lead, scoring three time in the third quarter, in the closing seconds junior Ben Stuarts (Cumberland, ME) goal with :02 left on the clock was able to bring Clark to within three.  At the end of the third quarter the score was 8-5 Curry.

Sophomore Chris Johnson (Amherst, MA) of Clark with his second goal of the game was able to bring Clark to within two goals of Curry early in the fourth quarter.  Curry however answered with a three goal run of their own with goals by Hammersley, his fourth of the game, Gallagher, and senior Paul Marchese.  Hammersley fourth goal of the game ended up being the game winner. 

Junior Gordon Holmes had 12 saves in the winning effort for Curry and sophomore Andrew Devito (Glastonburry, CT) had a game high 17 saves for Clark. 

Curry after a five game home stand next travels to Regis College on Saturday March 20 with a 12:00 face-off.  Saturday’s game between Curry and Regis will make the first ever men’s varsity lacrosse game for Regis.  Clark next plays on Tuesday March 23 as they host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
