MLAX Wins Season Opener 7-6 Against Mount Ida

MILTON, Mass. – With a second-half comeback in the season opener, the Curry College Colonels defeated the Mount Ida Mustangs, 7-6, and took home the first annual Frostbite Classic Trophy.  Mount Ida falls to 0-1, while Curry starts the season 1-0.

Mount Ida took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Brandon Keith and Matthew Savage.  Curry was able to cut the lead in the first quarter on a goal by Russell Lanham.  Lanham’s first-quarter goal would be the only goal for Curry College in the first half.  Mount Ida went into halftime with a 4-1 lead behind second-quarter goals from Savage and Nick Yacuzzi.

Momentum swung back and forth between the two teams in the third quarter. With 2:50 remaining in the frame, Curry was able to start its comeback with a goal by Michael Snyder. A minute later, Evan Hammersley tallied for the hosts.  By the end of the third, Mount Ida’s three-goal lead was narrowed to one.

Both teams decided to save their best lacrosse for the fourth quarter.  Yacuzzi - with his second goal of the game - was able to stretch the Mustangs’ lead back to two goals. The lead did not last for long as the Colonels answered with three goals of their own.  Hammersley, Paul Marchese, and Nicholas Haidemenos gave Curry a one-goal lead with 6:27 left in the game. Christopher Prophete then tied the game for Mount Ida with just under five minutes to go in regulation. Finally at the 1:28 mark, Hammersley broke the deadlock by putting the Colonels on top, 7-6.  Mount Ida gave one last push, but goaltender Michael Hibbard was able to shut the door and preserve the season-opening victory and Frostbite Classic title.

Curry resumes action at home against UMass Boston on Saturday March 6 at 12:00 pm, while Mount Ida travels to UMass Dartmouth the same day for a 1:00 pm contest.
