Men's Ice Hockey Wins Big over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Curry College men's ice hockey defeated Salve Regina University 6-1 Friday night in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at St. George's School Rink.

With the win, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 16-4-1 and a conference record of 11-3-0.

The lion's share of scoring was done in the second, with the Colonels scoring four times in the period. Sophomore Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) and junior Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) assisted sophomore Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H,) two minutes into the contest to give the Colonels a 1-0. Curry scored again just 14 seconds later when sophomore Ben Biester (Danville, Calif.) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Ryan Prewitt (Abington, Mass.).

After a goal by the Seahawks, Connor scored again to put Curry ahead 3-1, with assists once again coming from Dill and Laksonen. Prewitt and sophomore Tyler Drummond (Baldwin, N.Y.) found Biester halfway through the second to put the Colonels on top 4-1 and cap off scoring in the period.

Curry scored two more times in the third period, with the goals coming within 21 seconds of each other at 16:26 and 16:46. The first was scored by senior George Vonakis (Abingdon, Md.) with an assist coming from sophomore Jesse Galassi (Lockport, N.Y.). The final goal of the contest was unassisted by sophomore Killian Rowlee (Fulton, N.Y.).

Freshman goaltender Shane Soderwall (Algonquin, Ill.) played the entire game in net for the Colonels, making 30 saves in the win.

Curry College hosts Salve Regina in the Hockey Fights Cancer game on Saturday, February 3rd, beginning at 3 p.m.
