Men's Ice Hockey Dropped by Amherst in Overtime

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 to Amherst College in overtime on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Canton Ice House.

With the defeat, the Colonels fall to 8-4-1 overall on the season.

Amherst opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the contest, but a pair of first period goals from Curry gave the hosts the lead heading to the first intermission. Sophomore Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) leveled the score at the 12:46 mark, before Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) put Curry on top with a power play goal at 18:24.

The Mammoths netted the only goal of the second to send the contest to the third knotted at 2-2.

Amherst took the lead late in the third period, but the advantage lasted only 29 seconds as Laaksonen wrapped in his second goal of the game with 2:49 to play to force overtime.

With 2:19 showing on the clock in the 3-on-3, Amherst's Matt Toporowski scored the game-winner, giving the game its final score of 4-3.

In net, Curry freshman Shane Soderwall (Algonquin, Ill.) took the loss, stopping 33 of 37 shots faced.

Next up for the Colonels, they will host future conference foe Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Ice House.
