#9 Men's Ice Hockey Opens Season with 4-4 Draw

CANTON, Mass. - The #9 Curry College men's ice hockey opened its 2023-24 season with a 4-4 draw against UMass Boston in non-conference action at the Canton Ice House Saturday afternoon.

With the draw, the Colonels begin their season with a record of 0-0-1.

UMass Boston dominated the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Colonels 16-4 in the frame and scoring the period's only two goals.

The Beacons took a three-goal lead with six and a half minutes left in the second, before the Colonels finally broke through on the first goal of the season from sophomore Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.). The reigning CCC Rookie of the Year took a low-angle shot that beat UMass Boston's goaltender high on the short side to cut Curry's deficit to 3-1 with 3:48 left in the second.

UMass Boston reclaimed a three-goal lead on a goal with 1:19 showing on the clock in the second to take a 4-1 lead to the final frame.

A power play goal from senior Tao Ishizuka (Providence, R.I.) moved Curry to within two just under four and a half minutes into the third. Six minutes later, Curry moved to within one on an Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) tally.

Curry drew even on the first goal of the season from sophomore Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.) on a point shot with 7:41 to play, forcing the game into overtime.

Neither team could find the winner in the extra session, and the contest ended in a 4-4 tie.

Curry senior netminder Roland Polasek (Bor, Czech Republic) made 36 saves in the tie for the Colonels.

Next up, the Colonels will take on Endicott for a crucial CCC opener on Friday night at the Canton Ice House. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
