Men's Ice Hockey Dropped by #11 UNE

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's ice hockey fell just short against #11 University of New England by a final score of 3-2 on Hockey Fights Cancer Day at the Canton Ice House.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 13-7-2 overall and 11-6-1 in Commonwealth Coast Confernence play.

Curry wasted no time getting on the board on the afternoon, as Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) opened the scoring just 2:40 into the contest. Zhukov followed up a Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) rebound and buried the goal for his seventh of the season. Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ontario) also earned an assist on the goal.

UNE scored twice in a span of 1:08 midway through the first to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Kuzmich scored the tying goal at 10:52 for the Nor'easters, before the go-ahead goal was scored on the man advantage by Daniel Winslow.

Just 51 seconds into second, Jimmy Elser extended UNE's lead to 3-1 with assists to Tyler Seltenreich and Logan DiScanio.

The 3-1 score nearly held for the balance of the game, but Curry pulled to within one at 18:47 of the third with the goalie pulled. A centering pass from sophomore George Vonakis (Abingdon, Md.) deflected off Kent's body and into the net to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Colonels were unable to get any closer. Zhukov earned a secondary assist on Kent's marker.

In net, senior Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) turned aside 24 shots in the losing effort. Billy Girard made 27 stops for UNE.

Next up for Curry, they'll play a rescheduled contest at Salve Regina at 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon at St. George's School.
