Late Goal Pushes Men's Ice Hockey Past Becker in First Contest of Season

CANTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over Becker College on Friday night at the Canton Ice House.

The Colonels' Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.)  scored what would be the game-winning goal with just 1:47 left in the final period.

After falling behind, the Hawks—who were outshot 30-24 in the contest—fired eight pucks at Curry goalie Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.), but couldn't come up with the equalizer. Murch finished up with 23 saves for the Colonels (1-0-0).

Curry got on the board with just eight seconds left in the first period. Sophomore Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) netted his first goal of the season off assists from senior Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and junior Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ontario).

The second period saw no scoring, but the third featured a flurry of goals. Senior Tristan Morin (Unionville, Conn.) found the back of the net 4:14 into the frame on a power-play opportunity. Curran and junior Nick Magill-Diaz (Troy, Mich.) picked up the helpers.

Becker would pull even with back-to-back markers in the final frame. Sophomore Colby Audette (Colchester, Vt.) put a shot past Murch 7:16 into the period and then junior Chuck Costello (Philadelphia, Pa.) converted a penalty shot with 2:43 remaining in regulation.

Just under a minute later, Curran lit the lamp for a goal, coming off assists from sophomore Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) and Selanne for the 3-2 final.

Curry went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Hawks were 0-for-2.

The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Worcester Ice Center.
