Hockey Blanks Golden Bears in Conference Play

CANTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team shut out visiting Western New England University, 4-0, on Friday night in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at the Canton Ice House.

The Colonels (13-4-3 overall, 8-3-2 CCC) scored its first goal 10:11 into the opening period on a tally from junior Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden). Sophomores Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) and Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas) picked up the assists. The 1-0 score held for the remainder of the stanza as Curry had a 17-9 shot advantage in the first stanza.

The Colonels tacked on another in the second as Ochterbeck found the back of the net off of assists from Curran and junior Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.) with 10:25 left on the clock to make the score 2-0. Curry dominated the shot category, 18-3, in the middle frame.

The Colonels added two goals in the final period, the first from junior Michael Snow (Medford, Mass.) 1:05 in. The second came with 10:27 remaining in regulation as sophomore Nick Magill-Diaz (Troy, Mich.) deposited a power play marker coming off of helpers from Curran and Ochterbeck.

The 4-0 lead stood as Curry walked away with its first clean sheet of the season.

Senior Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) registered the win in between the pipes, converting 21 saves in his second career shutout. Senior Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) tallied 50 stops in the setback.

The Colonels outshot the Golden Bears (3-15-2 overall, 1-11-1 CCC) 54-21 in the game. Curry was able to cash in once on the power play, going 1-for-2 while Western New England finished 0-for-5.

The two teams wrap up a home-and-home series tomorrow night in West Springfield, Mass. at the Olympia Ice Center. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
