Hockey Battles Visiting Fredonia to a 4-4 Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass.- In a non-conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Friday night at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College tie SUNY Fredonia, 4-4 in overtime.  With the tie, the Colonels move to 8-5-2 overall.  The Blue Devils are now 4-6-4 overall.

After a scoreless first period, Fredonia netted three goals in the second frame to take the lead.  The Blue Devils tallied the three in a five-minute span.  The first came at the 7:49 mark when Damien Kulynych (Calgary, Alberta) received a pass from Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.) and took a slap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Curry's netminder Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.).  The second was scored 1:31 later after both Kulynych and Long assisted Ryan Wilkinson (Calgary, Alberta) for his first on the night.  At 12:56 Long received the puck right in front of the net and stuck it past Mohney.  Taylor Bourne (Calgary, Alberta) and Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) were credited with the assists.  The Colonels got on the board just under a minute later after Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) tipped the puck in behind the Blue Devils goaltender, Christopher Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.).  Mike Apreda (Newmarket, Ontario) and Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) earned the assists.  Fredonia extended their lead back to three after Kulynych netted his second of the game off an assist from Long, his third.  Curry however came back to tie the match when they went on a three goal scoring spree in the final 2:30 of the period.  Jordon Reed (Ajax, Ontario) fired one in off assists from Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario) and Jarrett Kup (Rosseau, Ontario) for a 4-2 score.  James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) brought the game within one on his lone goal of the game.  Murphy was assisted by Apreda and Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.).  With 36 seconds remaining Vankleef tallied the tying goal on assists by Brian White (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.).

The teams battled throughout the final period to score the game-winner but neither could find the back of the net.  The Blue Devils held a huge lead in shots, 18-5, but solid play between the pipes by Mohney held them scoreless.  The squads went into overtime and after the five minutes of play ended on a 4-4 tie. 

Curry went 0-3 on power plays while Fredonia was 1-3.  The Blue Devils finished with a game-high 48 shots and the Colonels 29.

Curry's Mohney made an impressive 44 saves in net.  Eiserman came up with 25 stops in goal for Fredonia.

Curry's next game is at home on Saturday, January 17 at 4:40 p.m.  against Buffalo State.  Fredonia is next in action on Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Johnson & Wales in a 7:05 p.m. game start.
