Mason Nets Game Winner in a Thrilling 4-3 Overtime Win Against Johnson & Wales

Pawtucket, R.I. –  The Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-3 overtime setback against Curry in an ECAC Northeast contest at Lynch Arena on Tuesday evening.

The two teams traded scoring chances throughout the first period before Johnson & Wales got on the board with a goal by freshman Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) with assists to freshman Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior Eddie Patterson (Cinnaminson, N.J.).  The Wildcats took the one goal lead heading into the locker room at the first intermission.

Curry was able to even the game on a power play goal by freshman Dan McGinniss (Hanover, Mass.) when he put in a pass from sophomore Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) at the 12:46 mark of the second stanza.  The game was knotted at 1-1 after two periods of play.

The visiting Colonels controlled the action early in the third and took the 2-1 lead on a goal by senior Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) just 4:26 into the period.  Curry struck again just over a minute later as a goal by freshman Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) gave the team the 3-1 advantage.  Johnson & Wales rallied, however and cut the lead to 3-2 when senior Justin Decowski (Hamilton, N.J.) scored at the 14:06 mark.  Freshman Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Greg Soltes (Cleveland, Ohio) assisted on the goal for JWU.  The Wildcats came all the way back to knot the game at 3-3 with just over two minutes left in regulation after Brouillard and Patterson found freshman Michael Mazzotta (Mars, Pa.) for the game-tying goal, sending the contest into overtime.

At the 2:55 mark of the extra period, junior Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) put in a pass from freshman Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mas.) to give Curry the 4-3 victory.

Freshman Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) registered 34 saves in the loss for Johnson & Wales while junior Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) had 31 stops in the win for Curry.

With the setback Johnson & Wales falls to 17-7-1 for the year and 7-6-1 in the ECAC Northeast while Curry improves to 10-13-2 overall and 6-8 in play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, March 1st when they host Suffolk in an ECAC Northeast Quarterfinal contest starting at 5:30 p.m. The Colonels will travel to Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast Quarterfinal game in a 4:35 p.m. start.  (Game Recap Courtesy of JWU Sports Information)
