MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast Conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Tuesday night in Milton, Mass, Curry College defeated Nichols College 2-1 in overtime.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 11-10-4 overall and 7-3-4 in the ECAC Northeast.  The Bison fell to 16-8-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the ECAC Northeast.

Despite the shots being even at 10 apiece in the opening frame, the Bison were the first to get on the board.  At the 14:17 minute mark, senior Will Brown (Hershey, Pa.) took a slap shot outside the slot.  Senior Ray Furr (Woodbridge, Va.) saw an open Brown and was credited with the assist after he sent the pass.  Solid play by the Nichols netminder, freshman Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) held Curry scoreless.

Colonels had a slight advantage in shots in the second period outshooting the Bison 9-8.  Curry’s goaltender senior Joe Dawson (Woodbury, Minn.) kept Nichols to just one goal, coming up with eight big saves.  Larson played another strong 20 minutes for Nichols to help his team hold on to the 1-0 lead.  The second saw four penalties, three for the Bison and one for the Colonels.  Both teams’ penalty kills were tough as neither team allowed a power-play goal. 

Curry tied the game in the final period just 3:58 in.  Freshman Ryan Gay (Nesconset, N.Y.) one-timed the puck from the blue line that sailed over the shoulder of Larson.  Gay was assisted freshmen Nicholas Coppola (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and Frankie Posillico (Massapequa, N.Y.). With just 1:16 left to play Nichols sophomore Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) was called for a hit from behind.  The Colonels had a couple of chances to score but time ran out and the teams went into overtime.

Just 44 seconds into the five minute sudden death overtime and right after the power-play had expired; junior Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) scored the game-winner.  Curry passed the puck around the zone and Devereaux was able to stick it passed the glove of Larson.  Senior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) and Gay were credited with the assists. The Colonels had two shots on net while the Bison had none.

Curry went 0 for 2 on power-plays, while Nichols went 0 for 4.

The Colonel's Dawson made 27 saves in net in 65:00 minutes of play for the win.  Larson came up with 31 stops for the Bison in the loss.

With the win, Curry secured the #3 seed in the conference and will host Johnson & Wales in the ECAC Northeast Quarterfinal game held on Saturday, February 23 at 4:35 p.m.  Nichols holds the #2 seed and receives a bye for the first round of the tournament.
