Hockey Takes Care of ECAC Northeast Rival Suffolk, 8-2

MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast Conference match-up, Curry College defeated Suffolk University, 8-2, in men's ice hockey action on Thursday night in Milton, Mass,.  The Colonels improved to 11-7-2 overall and remain undefeated in the conference with a 9-0-0 record, while the Rams fell to 2-17-0 overall and 0-9-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

Despite Suffolk scoring the first goal of the game just 1:34 into the first period, the Colonels scored four unanswered goals to end the frame with a 4-1 lead.  The Rams’ goal was scored by senior Joe Greene (Weymouth, Mass.).  Greene tipped the puck in past Curry’s freshman goaltender Luc Montoni (Newbury, Mass.)  The goal was assisted by sophomore Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.).  The Colonels responded just 1:44 minutes later to tie the game at one apiece.  Senior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) earned the first of the four first period goals off assists by senior Payden Benning (Estevan, SK) and senior Ryan Barlock (Chicago, Ill.).  This was Barlocks’ first of three assists in the frame and Bennings’ first of two.  Benning went on to score the next goal off a power-play.  Suffolk’s freshman Chris Rettig (Raynham, Mass.) was called for boarding and Benning along with junior Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Barlock took advantage of the man-up situation.  Midway through the period, senior Mike Kavanagh (Little Neck, N.Y) took a slap shot from right over the blueline that sailed past the Rams’ sophomore netminder Cam Kelly (Brighton, Mass.).  Barlock and freshman Robert Kleiman (DeWitt, Mich.) were credited with the assists.  Junior Kaneshiro finished the scoring on another power-play when he found a loose puck in front of the net for his first goal of the season.  Benning and DeLong registered the assists.  Curry outscored Suffolk 24-6. 

The Rams once again were the first to get on the board to start the second period.  At the 6:10 minute mark, senior Joe Eaglione (Hingham, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal.  Curry went on to score two goals just 25 seconds apart.  The Colonels scored their third power-play goal of the night from freshman Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ont.).  Reed was assisted by juniors Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta) and Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.).  Junior Greg Fosso (East Meadow, N.Y.) won the faceoff and made a quick pass to senior Michael Curran (Arlington, Mass.).  Curran found junior George Isham (Chicago, Ill.) who sent the puck back to Fosso for the goal.  The final goal came with just 1:48 remaining.  Freshman Braeden Ruud (Vermilion, Alberta) found the back of the net off assists by Kleiman and sophomore Alex Barr (West Milford, N.J.).   Shots in the second period were; Curry 17, Suffolk 9. 

The final period saw just one goal.  Barlock scored at the 17:20 mark for his fourth point of the game.  He finished with one goal and three assists.  Hendry and Reed were on the assists. 

The Colonels finished with 52 shots, while the Rams had 17.  Curry went 3 for 7 on power-plays and Suffolk 0-2.

Curry's Montoni earned his first win in net making 15 saves.  Kelly finished with 44 in the loss.

Curry's next game is away at ECAC Northeast opponent Western New England on Saturday, February 4 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.  Suffolk travels to Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast contest also on Saturday, February 4 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
