Hockey Absorbs 4-2 Loss Against Manhattanville College
MILTON, Mass. – Manhattanville College defeated Curry College, 4-2, on Tuesday night at the Max Ulin Rink.  The Colonels and Valiants had played on January 10 and battled each other to a 2-2 overtime tie.  With win Manhattanville improved to 8-4-3 overall.  Curry fell to7-7-1 in the loss. 

Despite Manhattanville outshooting Curry 21-14 in the first period, the Colonels scored two goals to head into the second with a two goal advantage.  Junior netminder Joe Dawson (Woodbury, Minn.) was solid between the pipes to keep the Valiants scoreless.  Just 6:31 into the frame, junior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) found the back of the net off assists by junior George Isham (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Alexander Barr (West Milford, N.J.).  Curry earned their second score when freshman Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) took a slap shot that sailed past Manhattanvilles’ senior goaltender Pierre-Olivier Lemieux (Rimouski, Quebec).  Juniors Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta) and Greg Fosso (East Meadow, N.Y.) were credited with the assists. 

Shots in the second period were in the Colonels favor as they lead 14-9.  Lemieux was able turn away all 14 shots.  Manhattanville was able to get on the board at the 5:23 mark.  Senior Ryan Barlock (Chicago, Ill.) was called for slashing and the Valiants were able to take advantage of the man-up situation.  Sophomore Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ontario) received a pass off a face-off taken by freshman Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J.).  Van Natter one-timed it past Dawson for his team’s first score of the night.  Over the next 14:37 minutes both goaltenders played strong to finish out the period with Curry holding the 2-1 lead.

The final period saw Manhattanville score three unanswered goals.  The Valiants wasted no time, knotting the game at two apiece just 1:06 into the frame.  Manhattanville won the face-off and junior Scott Hudson (St. Albert, Alberta) found a loose puck in front of the net for the tying score.  Curry had their chances but Lemieux made 27 saves over the final two periods, 13 in the third, to keep the Colonels scoreless.  The game-winning goal was scored unassisted at the 14:14 mark by sophomore Craig Simchuk (Winnipeg, Manitoba).  The Valiants sealed the victory with 1:04 remaining in regulation.  Sophomore Louie Balzano (Staten Island, N.Y.) beat a Curry defender and shot the puck just over Dawson’s right shoulder.  Sophomore Brian Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) assisted on the goal, his second of the night. 

Lemieux turned aside 39 of 41 shots to earn the win for Manhattanville, while Dawson made 38 saves on 42 shots for the Colonels.

Curry will host Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast matchup on January 21 for a 4:35 p.m. game start.  Manhattanville will return to action on Friday night, as the team hosts Neumann at 7 p.m.
