Hockey Surges Past Babson College, 5-1

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Babson College 5-1, in men's ice hockey action on Tuesday night in Milton, Mass.  The Colonels improve to 8-7-2 overall, while the Beavers fall to 8-8-1.

The Colonels were the first to get on the board in the opening frame at the 13:48 minute mark.  Sophomore Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Nigel, CA) took a shot which rebounded off Babson’s sophomore goaltender Zeke Testa (Wellesley, MA).  Senior Ray Nicks (Surrey, BC) was in front of the net to collect the loose puck and score for Curry.  Nicks has scored a goal in each of the last three games.  The Colonels outshot the Beavers 12-2 to finish out the first period.

Curry took a two goal lead just five minutes into the second period.  Senior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA) took advantage of a power play opportunity after Babson was called for a cross-check.  Warsofsky received passes from Kaneshiro and sophomore Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta).  The Colonels got one more before the period ended to extend their lead.  Sophomore Ian DeLong (Lions, PA) took a slap shot from the blue line into the back of the net.  Nicks and junior Shane Geib (Stony Plain, AB) were credited with the assists.  Solid play in net by Curry’s sophomore Travis Owens (Burbank, CA) kept the Beavers scoreless.

Babson finally got on the board 4:14 into the third period when freshman Matt Furey (Quincy, MA) scored on an unassisted goal.  Curry answered back just two minutes later when Warsofsky one-timed the puck into the top right corner of the net for his second goal of the night.  Warsofsky received passes from junior Michael Curran (Arlington, MA) and freshman Michael Lopez (Newton, MA). The Colonels would get one more to finish out the game for the 5-1 win.  Curry received a hooking penalty at 3:03 left in regulation.  At that time Babson pulled their goaltender to give the Beavers a 6-4 man up advantage.  Warsofsky intercepted a Babson pass and sent the puck up ice to junior Christopher Atkinson (Sparta, NJ) who scored on the empty net for a short-handed goal. 

The Colonels finished with a total of 34 shots and Babson 29.

Babson’s Testa made 29 total saves in net for the loss. Curry’s goaltender Owens made 28 saves for the win. 

Curry's next game is at home on Thursday, January 27 at 7:35 p.m. against Johnson & Wales.  Babson travels to St. Michael’s on Friday, January 28 for a 7;00 p.m. start.
