PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Sophomore Steven Mohler recorded a goal and an assist to lead Curry College to a 4-1 win over Salve Regina University in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) men’s hockey action Saturday night at Portsmouth Abbey Arena.
The win lifts the Colonels to 10-4-1 (5-0-1 ECAC) and 16-2 lifetime against Salve Regina, which fell to 1-15-0 (0-6-0 ECAC).
Senior captain Pat Bambery (Essex Junction, Vt.) staked the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 30 seconds into the second period. With a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:35, senior Nate Burns (Sandwich, Mass.) fired a shot from the right point that was saved, but junior Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y.) slid the puck to Bambery, who scored his seventh goal of the season and fourth on the power-play.
The Colonels evened the tilt at one when senior Ross Enmark skated through the SRU defense and beat sophomore goalie Ben Bradley (Newburyport, Mass.) blocker side for his fifth of the season at 9:47. Just 36 seconds later, sophomore Payden Benning potted his fifth of the season to give Curry a 2-1 lead which it took into the intermission. In the third, freshman George Isham pushed the lead to two goals with his third of the season at 5:23, and Mohler iced the contest with his seventh of the season at 14:21.
Bradley finished the evening with 43 saves for the Seahawks while senior Steven Jakiel made 19 saves to improve to 6-2-0 on the season for Curry. The Colonels converted on one of their seven chances with the man advantage while Salve Regina scored once in four tries.
“We haven’t been short on criticism with the guys this season, but this is a night where we played well,” said Salve Regina head coach Andy LeColst. “We played good hockey, and that’s a good team. We probably took too many penalties in the second period, but other than that, I like the way we played. There are going to be nights where we put in 60 minutes and don’t come out on top, and tonight was one of those nights.”
The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Assumption at 8:15 pm. The Colonels travel to Babson for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
