Men's Basketball Comes Back From Early Deficit to Beat UNE

Milton, MA - The Curry Colonels overcame a slow start on Tuesday to defeat the University of New England Nor'Easters by a final score of 89-83. With the win the Colonels are now 11-11 on the season and 6-7 in CCC play, while UNE is now 0-14 and 5-17.

The game did not start how the Colonels were hoping, as they were outscored 19-2 over the first seven minutes. But the Colonels did not give up, and used a 20-5 run to take a brief lead at 33-32. But the Nor'Easters would score the final four points of the half, and take a 37-33 lead into halftime.

A 13-2 run out of the half gave the Colonels another lead, one they would not give up. Another 9-0 run gave them their biggest lead of the game at 55-42. The Nor'Easters would climb back into it though, and it was a three point game with just over eight minutes to play. But the Colonels toughed it out, and extended the lead back out to 10. BUt once again UNE fought back, and thi stime got within one at 81-80 with two and a half minutes remaining. But a layup from Carl Monplaisir steadied things, and the Colonels made six straight free throws with under a minute to play to ice things, taking the game 89-83.

Jason Romans led the way for the Colonels, scoring 24 points. He was one of four double-digit scorers for Curry, being joined by Carl Monplaisir (17), Nick Johnson (14), and Favour Okeke (10). Both Monplaisir and Lowelle Torres had nine rebounds. Romans and Jonathan Joel led the team with four assists each. Defensively, multiple guys contributed. Mustafo Vanjov and Shawn Charles each had three blocks, while Tommy Mallinson had two blocks and two steals.
