Men's Basketball Wins on Okeke's Last Second Shot

Milton, MA - The Curry College Colonels Men's Basketball team won in thrilling fashion on Wednesday, defeating Gordon by a final score of 71-70. With the win, the Colonels are now 10-10 on the season and 4-8 in CCC play, while the Fighting Scots are now 5-15 and 2-9.

The two teams went back and forth early, with neither team holding a lead bigger than three 12 minutes into the game. A mini 5-0 run by the Colonels put them up seven, and they would build it up to as many as 11 in the first half. They would eventually lead 39-31 at the break.

The second half was just as tight, as the Fighting Scots jumped out to an 8-0 run to start the half to grab a one point lead. But a 7-0 run by Curry had the Colonels taking the lead right back. A three pointer by Favour Okeke, a sign of things to come, gave the Colonels a 68-61 lead with just over three minutes left. But 9-0 run by Gordon gave them the lead with under 30 seconds left to play.

After a Jason Romas missed layup, a scramble for the ball occurred, with Lowelle Torres grabbing the ball. After the Colonels called a timeout with eight seconds remaining, still trailing 70-68, Favour Okeke hit a three pointer off of a pass from Nick Johnson, putting the Colonels up 71-70 with two seconds left. Gordon's last second pass was intercepted by the Colonels, giving Curry the win.

Okeke was the hero, and for good reason. The game-winning shot was his sisth three pointer made on the night, going 6-8. He scored 20 points to lead the team, with the only other double-digit scorer being Lowelle Torres. Torres also grabbed eight rebounds, just one less than the team leader Mustafo Vanjov, who had nine. Carl Monplaisir also had eight rebounds. Jason romans led the team with five assists.

Up Next - The Colonels will next play on Saturday when they travel to WNE for a 3pm start.
