Men’s Basketball Fends off Fighting Scots

WENHAM, Mass. - Curry College earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory by defeating Gordon College 67-66 Tuesday night in men's basketball action at the Bennett Center.

With the win, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 7-7 and a conference record of 1-6.

The Fighting Scots amassed a 10-0 lead through the first five minutes of play, but the Colonels managed to battle back into the contest. Sophomore Mustafo Vanjov (Khorog, Tajikistan) caught fire off the bench with a team-high nine points in the half, going 3-for-3 from the field including one three-pointer.

Trailing by just three points to start the second, Curry managed to take the lead from Gordon several times throughout the half, with both teams unable to establish a significant advantage. With just over two minutes remaining in the contest, senior Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) knocked down a three-pointer to put the Colonels ahead for good.

Senior Lowelle Torres ( Vineland, N.J.) paced the Colonels with 17 points while Vanjov finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Jason Romans finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Curry College returns to action on Saturday, January 13th, to host Hartford beginning at 2 p.m.
