Men’s Basketball Handed First Loss by Wentworth

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated 64-57 Wednesday night in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball contest at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

Jason Romans (Peabody, Mass.) and Shawn Charles (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored early to open up a 6-0 lead for the Colonels at the onset of play. From there, the Leopards strung together a 16-point scoring run that was finally ended by a Romans jumper midway through the half.

Later in the first, James Scali (Newburyport, Mass.) scored on a fast break layup and was fouled on the way up. He knocked down the free throw, putting Curry within three points of the Wentworth lead. A Romans jumper, Charles dunk, fast break layup by Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.), and three-pointer by Favour Okeke (East Hartford, Conn.) tied the game at 22 apiece and closed out scoring for the Colonels in the half.

Tommy Mallinson (Wilmington, Mass.) knocked down a three to open up scoring in the second half, while a steal and fast break layup by Romans gave the Colonels their first lead (29-28) since the start of the game. An alley-oop dunk from Mallinson to Charles fired up the Curry crowd, and a Mallinson three extended the Colonels' lead.

Three minutes later, Charles threw down a second alley-opp dunk on a pass from Okeke on a fast break. Charles was fouled on the play and knocked down the free throw to extend the Colonels' lead to 41-34.

From there, the contest went back and forth until the Leopards pulled away with a 55-49 lead with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Mallinson knocked down a three-pointer coming out of a timeout followed by a Johnson layup that put the Colonels within three points of the lead. Ultimately, Wentworth was able to fend off the hometeam and escape with the win.

Romans led the Colonels with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Mallinson was close behind with 13 points, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Charles went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Curry College returns to action on Saturday, December 2nd, to continue conference play in a road matchup against Nichols College beginning at 3 p.m.
