Men’s Basketball Storms Past Nor’Easters

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College Men's Basketball defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent University of New England by a final score of 72-58 Thursday evening.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 3-9 overall this season and 1-4 in the CCC.

The opening half in Katz Gymnasium saw the Colonels nab a 19-9 lead following a Jason Romans (Peabody, Mass.) three-pointer just eight minutes into the half. In four minutes, the visiting Nor'Easters battled to come within four points of the hosting Colonels' lead. 

Two successful shots from the field by Curry's Braydon Forsman (Lewiston, Idaho) cushioned the Curry lead with seven minutes remaining in the half. With two minutes left in the half, UNE's Adrian Torres knocked down a field goal to tie the contest at 30-30. A Tommy Mallinson (Wilmington, Mass.) jumper and layup by Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) sent the two conference sides into the half with Curry leading 34-30. 

The second half opened in favor of the hosting Colonels, Curry senior forward Lowelle Torres (Vineland, NJ) notching six points in the first four minutes of play along with a Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) jumper to take a 40-34 lead. With ten minutes left in the half, the visiting Nor'Easters brought the score within four points, Curry now leading 48-44.

The Colonels pulled ahead by 12 with just over five minutes remaining on an Angelo Sardegna three-pointer, making the score 59-47. The visiting Nor'Easters would not be able to catch the Curry lead through regulation, sealing a 72-58 victory for the Colonels on home court.

The Colonels were led by Nick Johnson (18 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists), Angelo Sardegna (13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists), and Jason Romans (11 points, 5 rebounds).

The Colonels return to the court Saturday, January 7th as they travel to face Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Suffolk University at 3 PM.
