Men’s Basketball Halted by Hawks

 

BRISTOL, RI - Curry College Men's Basketball fell to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Roger Williams on the road Saturday evening by a final score of 73-58.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-6 overall this season and 0-2 in the CCC.

The opening half of the conference bout saw two evenly matched sides. Layups from Curry's Jonathan Joel (Cranston, R.I.) and Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) pushed the Colonels to an 8-4 lead midway through the first half. A Frankie Santiago Jr. (New Britain, Conn.) layup and free throw would keep the Colonels in the action late in the first half with the score set at 19-18. With just two seconds remaining in the first half Curry's Santiago Jr. notched another layup to send both sides into the halftime break even at 24-24. 

The hosting Hawks began the second half on a 10-5 scoring run. An Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) three-pointer and successful shot from the interior in quick succession brought the score to 36-37 in favor of Roger Williams with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. In five minutes, Roger Williams tallied 18 points to Curry's four, prompting a timeout by the Colonels. The hosting Hawks would hold back the Colonels from closing in on their lead, closing out the conference matchup with a final score of 73-58. 

Curry College posted 36.4% (24-66) from the field compared to Roger Williams' 46% (29-63).

The Colonels were led by junior guard Frankie Santiago Jr. (17 points), Angelo Sardegna (15 points, 4 rebounds), and Nick Johnson (5 points, 13 rebounds).

The Colonels return to the court Tuesday as they continue CCC action with a home matchup against Nichols College at 7 PM.
