Suffolk Races Past Men's Basketball

BOSTON – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped a 105-53 decision to Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Court.

Five Rams players scored in double figures. William Rowe (Reston, Va.) led the way with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow starters Nate Hale (Nashua, N.H.) and Alex Jacovides (Tampa, Fla.) pitched in 18 and 17, respectively. Jason Mahoney (Rowley, Mass.) and Ismail Fofana (Boston, Mass.) pitched 16 and 12, respectively, off the bench.

Freshman JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) tallied 15 points to pace the Colonels (0-4 overall). Classmate Asante Smith (Norfolk, Va.) chipped in with seven points while Joshua Vargas (Fairhaven, Mass.) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Offensively, Suffolk shot 50.6 percent from the field, had assists on 18 of their 41 field goals and made 12 three-pointers. Defensively, the Rams limited the Colonels to 27 percent from the field.

Suffolk also won the battle of the boards 58-32.

The Rams got out to a 9-2 lead that closed to a 13-8 gap five minutes in. Following a timeout, Suffolk went on 14-0 run to go up 27-8. Curry would get the lead down to 11, 27-16, with just under eight minutes remaining in the opening half.

Leonard's basket with 622 left in the stanza would be the last for the Colonels in the half. Suffolk would embark on a 22-point run to take control and take a 52-18 lead into the half.

Following the break, Suffolk pushed its advantage to 50, 81-31. The Rams put the game away in the first minutes of the second half as their advantage continued to grow for the 105-53 final.

Curry returns home to host Endicott College on Friday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m.
