Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Suffolk

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team came up on the short end of a 95-83 final against Suffolk University on Friday night at Katz Gymnasium.

Four starters for the Rams scored double figures in points with senior Nate Hale (Nashua, N.H.) leading the way with 25 points, including 6-for-7 from distance. Alex Jacovides (Tampa, Fla.) finished with 21 points while classmate Brendan Mulson (Albany, N.Y.) added 18, and William Rowe (Reston, Va.)  pitched in with 10.

Freshman Todd Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) paced the Colonels with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Sophomore Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) contributed 17 points while freshman JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points, four assists, and three steals.

Suffolk jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. The Rams used a 16-0 run to build a 21-6 advantage just over five minutes into the contest. The lead eventually reached as many as 24 in the opening 20. Curry trimmed the deficit to 15 on a couple different occasions in the closing moments of the first half and would go into the half trailing by 17, 51-34.

In the second half, Jacovides connected on a three to put the Rams ahead by 21 with 18:29 left in regulation. Two Robinson three-pointers cut the deficit to 17 and a layup by Leonard got it down to 15, 60-45. The Colonels continued to fight, pulling to within as few as 13 (64-51), on a layup from Robinson, which prompted a Suffolk timeout.

The Rams responded with eight straight points following the timeout to push the lead back to 21 with 13:21 remaining.

Curry made one final push, cutting the lead to 12 with 15-0 run to make the score 82-70 with 6:33 to go in regulation. That would be as close as the Colonels would get as Suffolk eventually came away with the 12-point victory, 95-83.

Curry (0-3 overall) will wrap the home-and-home series at Suffolk on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
