Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Gordon

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped a 90-67 decision to Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at the Katz Gymnasium.

The teams played an even first ten minutes with the Fighting Scots having a one-point edge at the 10:08 mark following a triple from sophomore Zach Quanico (Pacifica, Calif.) to give Gordon a 19-18 lead. The three-pointer started an 11-0 run to help the Fighting Scots build a 27-18 advantage with just under nine minutes left in the opening half. Gordon built its lead to as many as 17 in the first stanza and carried a 44-29 lead into the break.

The Fighting Scots outscored Curry 46-38 in the final 20 minutes. The Colonels were able to cut the deficit to eight after an 11-2 run, capped off by a layup by freshman Joshua Vargas (Fairhaven, Mass.), but that's as close as Curry would get. Gordon closed the contest strong and grew its lead to as many as 25 before the final buzzer in the 90-67 final.

Sardegna led the Colonels (0-2 overall) with 16 points, two rebounds, and six assists. Freshman Todd Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) joined Sardegna as the other starter in double figures with 12 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Freshman Asante Smith (Norfolk, Va.) chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Gordon (2-0 overall) shot a season-high 45 percent from the floor (33-for-73) while making 12 of 26 (46 percent) from three-point range. Curry shot 27-for-61 (43 percent) and made just eight of 25 from deep. The Fighting Scots held a 51-27 edge on the glass with 19 offensive boards.

Curry remains home to host Suffolk University on Friday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m.
