Men's Basketball Falls to Gordon in Opener

WENHAM, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team suffered a 99-63 setback against Gordon College on Friday night.  

Michael Makiej (Andover, Mass.) came off the bench to net a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Fighting Scots, who improved to 1-0 overall. Starter Garrett Sattazahn (Morris, Conn.) and reserve Justin Yu (North Brunswick, N.J.) also finished in double digits with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Freshman Joshua Vargas (Fairhaven, Mass.) paced the Colonels with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds in his first collegiate game.

Curry jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first six minutes of the contest, which would be erased by the midpoint of the opening half. The Colonels hung close and trailed 33-29 following a layup by Vargas. Gordon finished the stanza strong with a 10-1 spurt to grab a 13-point advantage (43-30) at the intermission.

The Fighting Scots built the lead to as many as 38 in the second half, shooting 56 percent as a team while going 3-for-9 from beyond the arc. Makiej led the attack with 22 points in the stanza. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Curry shot just 34 percent from the floor and 7-for-27 from deep. Sophomore Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) filled out the stat sheet with 12 points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Curry (0-1 overall) will wrap up a home-and-home with the Fighting Scots on Saturday, March 6 at the Katz Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m.
