Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Castleton in Season Opener, 101-74

DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Curry College men's basketball team suffered a 101-74 setback in its season opener against Castleton University on Friday night at the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by UMass Dartmouth.

The Spartans had three players score in double figures led by 15 points Jordan Nelson (Troy, N.Y.). Pavin Parrish (Rochester, Vt.) and Denis LeCours (Hardwick, Vt.) finished with 12 points each to close out the players in double figures as Castleton shot 45.8 percent from the field and forced 31 Curry turnovers.

Curry shot 57.4 percent for the game and went 10-for-15 from beyond the arc. Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) paced the Colonels with 15 points in 24 minutes. Thorpe-Johnson added one rebound and one steal. Louis Stein (Las Vegas, Nev.) joined Thorpe-Johnson as the lone other starter in double figures with 10 points. Jeff Card (Providence, R.I.) was the final Curry student-athlete in double figures with 10 points off the bench. He also pitched in three assists and one rebound in his collegiate debut.

Castleton opened the contest by grabbing a 14 point lead (25-11) less than eight minutes in. The double digit deficit remained for the rest of the half and it would reach 19 at 51-32 heading into the halftime intermission. The strong play for the Spartans continued as the lead ballooned to as many 41 with 7:46 left in the second half. The Colonels closed the deficit to as few as 27 in the latter stages of the game as the Spartans topped Curry 101-74.

Curry will play in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn Classic on Saturday, November 18 as they are set to face Elms College at 5:00 p.m.
