Men's Basketball Opens Two-Game CCC Lead After 84-76 Win Over Second-Place Gordon
MILTON, Mass. – In a battle of top men’s basketball squads in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), first-place Curry held off visiting Gordon, 84-76, on Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improve to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in league play, while the Fighting Scots slip to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in CCC action. Gordon also saw its five-game winning streak snapped.
 
Gordon took its biggest lead of the game (20-12) early in the first half after junior Alex Carnes (Phoenix, Ariz.) converted a jumper. Curry responded with a 19-6 run to close out the final 10 minutes of the opening frame and entered the break with a 31-26 edge. The run began when junior A.J. Stephens (Stamford, Conn.) made a layup at the 10-minute mark and was capped off with a made jump shot by senior Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.).
 
With 10:19 left in regulation, the Colonels took their largest lead of the game (57-42) after junior Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) converted a layup. The Fighting Scots chipped away and cut the deficit to five (65-60) after senior David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) split a pair from the charity stripe with 3:24 on the clock. Over the final two minutes of the game, Curry sank 12 free throws to hold off Gordon and claim the eight-point win.
 
The Colonels were led by Sedale Jones with a team-high 16 points. Papalambros, junior Carlos Ribeiro (Charlestown, Mass.) and sophomore Antonio Jones (Boston, Mass.) added 14 apiece. Stephens and senior Ted Amendola (Hyde Park, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points each. Ribeiro and Stephens also pulled down a team-best seven boards apiece.
 
David Dempsey scored a game-high 22 points, while Carnes contributed 18. Sophomore Jason Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Park Thomas (Scotsdale, Ariz.) scored 11 and 10, respectively. Freshman Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) pulled down eight rebounds.
 
Both teams return to CCC action on the road Tuesday, as the Colonels visit the University of New England at 7:30 p.m., while Gordon travels to Roger Williams for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
