Football Taken Down by Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Curry College football team fell 31-8 to Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

With the defeat, Curry falls to 3-5 overall on the season and 1-3 in the CCC.

The first three quarters of the contest were very low scoring, as a first quarter field goal and a mid-third quarter touchdown run accounted for the only points to give the Golden Bears a 10-0 lead heading to the fourth.

Two touchdowns in the start of the fourth quarter gave the Golden Bears a commanding 24-0 lead, but the Colonels refused to go down quietly. Curry responded to the second score with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Decker (Kings Park, N.Y.) to Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) with 3:15 remaining. The Colonels converted the two-point conversion to cut it to a two-score game, but Western New England recovered Curry's onside kick to end the rally.

The Golden Bears would score once more with just over a minute to play, giving the game its final score of 31-8.

Curry junior linebacker Michael Sims (Baltic, Conn.) had an enormous day for the Colonels, leading all players with 17 tackles in the defeat, the highest total on either team. Eight of his tackles were solo, while he also finished with one tackle for loss and one forced fumble. Sophomore Adem Kica (Oxford, Conn.) looked sharp defensively as well, setting a career-high with 14 tackles.

DeSouza was the biggest bright spot for Curry on the offensive side of the ball. His long touchdown reception was one of his season-high 10 catches on the afternoon, and he finished with 97 receiving yards. Freshman running back Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) ran the ball 27 times, piling up 80 yards on the ground, while also catching four more passes for 24 yards.

Next up for Curry, they will host Endicott College on Saturday for Senior Day at Walter M. Katz Field. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m., with a Senior Day ceremony scheduled for before the game.
