Football Rallies Past Salve Regina

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College football team earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to down Salve Regina 37-20 on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, Curry improves to 3-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in the CCC.

The first quarter of the conference bout saw the visiting Seahawks quickly take a one-score lead over the host Colonels. A seven-yard run by Joey Mauriello pushed Salve in front with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter.

The Colonels would immediately answer back, when freshman running back Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) returned the Seahawks' kickoff 89 yards to the end zone. With a successful Billy Lynch (Mansfield, Mass.) PAT, the Colonels tied up the score at 7-7.

A pair of touchdowns late in the first quarter from Salve Regina put the visitors ahead 20-7 after one.

In the final minute of the second quarter, Quinn capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 20-14 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

The second half proved to be all Colonels, as the hosts scored all 23 points of the game's final 30 minutes.

With 5:06 left in the third quarter, Curry took the lead on a two-yard touchdown rush from Quinn, putting the Colonels on top 21-20. Just 1:01 later, Curry went ahead by a touchdown when sophomore Adem Kica (Oxford, Conn.) blocked a Salve Regina punt before scooping the ball up and scampering into the end zone.

Curry added even more insurance just 14 seconds into the fourth quarter when Quinn ran in from 15 yards out for his third touchdown of the afternoon. A Lynch field goal with 2:16 to go sealed the deal for Curry.

Quinn led the Colonels offensively on the day, notching three touchdowns with 124 yards on 38 rush attempts. Wide receiver Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) recorded 97 yards on six catches, with a long of 49 yards. Curry starting quarterback Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) went 13-of-21 through the air for 154 yards.

Senior Greg Silvia (Coventry, R.I.) was Curry's leader offensively in the victory, finishing with 10 total tackles (four solo) and one pass breakup. Junior Kurtees Poisson (Taunton, Mass.) was a force on the defensive line, finishing with five tackles, three quarterback hurries, and one pass breakup.

The Colonels will return to the field next Saturday as they host CCC opponent Husson University for Senior Day at Katz Field at 1 p.m.
