Football Holds Off Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Curry College football team staved off a fourth quarter comeback bid to defeat Dean College 33-25 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Dale Lippert Field.

Curry had the first two scores of the game with a 61-yard touchdown rush by freshman Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) and a Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) 27-yard touchdown reception from Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) in the first quarter. The Bulldogs answered with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make the score 13-6 after one.

Dean pulled to within one with a touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter as the Colonels went to the locker room ahead 13-12.

The Colonels doubled their score in the third quarter with two touchdowns. Just 26 seconds into the half, Quinn ripped off his second long touchdown scamper of the afternoon, this time from 49 yards out, to put his team ahead 19-12. Midway through the quarter, Mullaney connected with senior Maxx Bell (Auburn, Maine) for a 41-yard touchdown catch and run to push the advantage to 26-12.

Curry went ahead by three scores early in the fourth, when Mullaney took matters into his own hands and rushed in from five yards out to put the Colonels on top 33-12.

Dean refused to go down quietly however, finding the end zone with 9:36 and 2:56 to play to cut Curry's lead to 33-25. The Bulldogs even recovered an onside kick after their second score, but the potential game-tying drive was cut short thanks to a strip sack from Curry sophomore Sproul Derolus (Stoughton, Mass.) that was recovered by senior Blake Schader (Assonet, Mass.), sealing the Colonel victory.

Quinn had his second straight huge week for the Colonels, rushing the ball 26 times for 203 yards and two scores. Mullaney went 14-of-21 through the air for 242 yards with a pair of touchdowns

Derolus finished with a team-best 10 tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Junior Michael Sims (Baltic, Conn.) registered nine tackles (seven solo), a sack, and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Curry's offensive clicked on all cylinders in the win, picking up 517 yards of total offense to Dean's 280. The Colonels went 8-of-14 (57 percent) on third-down tries in the victory.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return home to host Hilbert College next Saturday at Walter M. Katz Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
