Football Tripped Up by Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Curry College football team fell 22-16 to the Coast Guard Academy in its first road game of the 2022 season Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the defeat, Curry falls to 0-2 overall on the season, while the Bears improve to 1-1.

Coast Guard jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, before the Colonels got on the board late in the period when graduate quarterback Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) connected with wide receiver Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) from seven yards out, cutting the deficit to 10-6.

Midway through the second quarter, Curry jumped into the lead when freshman Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) opened a drive with a 69-yard touchdown scamper for his first collegiate score, giving the Colonels a 13-10 lead that they would carry into the locker room at halftime.

Curry's advantage did not last long in the second half, as Coast Guard regained the lead on a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half and never looked back.

Trailing 22-13 late in the contest, Curry made things interesting when senior Billy Lynch (Mansfield, Mass.) connected on a 32-yard field goal with 1:05 to play to move within a single score. The resulting onside kick resulted in a scramble, but when the dust settled, Coast Guard had recovered the kick to seal the victory.

Quinn was the highlight of the day for the Colonels, rushing the ball 21 times for 184 yards and the one touchdown, while also catching a pair of passes for 21 yards. Mullaney completed 23 of his 37 passes on the day for 163 yards and one touchdown, while DeSouza was the top receiver with eight receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Kevin Peete (Boston, Mass.) paced Curry offensively with six tackles, while Tahg Coakley (Danvers, Mass.), Michael Sims (Baltic, Conn.), Adem Kica (Oxford, Conn.), and Kurtees Poisson (Taunton, Mass.) all finished with five.

Next up for Curry, they will continue their brief road trip with a visit to Dean College next Saturday. Kick-off from Franklin is slated for 12 p.m.
