Colonels Defeat Bison, Record First CCC Win of the Season

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team was victorious over CCC opponent Nichols College Saturday afternoon on Katz Field. The Colonels took the contest 28-14.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 3-5 on the season and 1-4 in the CCC grabbing their first conference victory this season.

Nichols falls to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in the CCC.

Curry managed to get on the board first late in the first quarter with senior quarterback Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) rushing in for a score capping off a 76-yard, eight-play drive.

Nichols responded to the Curry score just 18 seconds later with a 65-yard touchdown pass completed by Nichols' senior quarterback Alpha Barry (Staten Island, N.Y.) to Archie Killian (Athens, GA). This score tied the contest 7-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

The Colonels extended their lead with 11 minutes left in the first half as junior receiver Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) caught a 12-yard pass concluding a nine-play, 59-yard drive in just under five minutes. The Colonels would take the lead; the score is then 14-7.

The Nichols College Bison keep the game alive with a rushing touchdown by quarterback Alpha Barry (Staten Island, N.Y.). The two-yard rush would cap a quick four-minute, seven-play drive. This ties the matchup once again, now 14-14.

Curry is able to chip away at the Bison's defense late in the first half, capitalizing on an 11-play, 86-yard drive; the Colonels extend their lead with a score by junior running back Chris Jenkins (Hyde Park, Mass.). The Colonels now lead 21-14 with just under a minute left in the half.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle between the two sides. Both teams were held to no scores through the allotted 15 minutes after the halftime break. Nichols had an opportunity to score just under three minutes into the second half but a fumble forced by Curry linebacker Michael Sims (Baltic, Conn.) and recovered by linebacker Blake Schader (Assonet, Mass.) granted the Colonels possession on their own six-yard line.

Curry furthers their lead just two minutes into the final period of play in the contest. Colonels running back Chris Jenkins (Hyde Park, Mass.) tallies another touchdown on the day with a 28-yard run increasing the lead to 28-14.

The Colonels would hold the Bison back from any threats in the fourth quarter. Curry closed the contest with a drive lasting just over 10 minutes, extinguishing any thoughts of retaliation by the Bison.

Curry senior quarterback Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) finished the contest with 14 completions on 21 attempts for 138 yards, a thrown touchdown, and a rushing touchdown.

Six different Colonels caught passes from Mullaney, led by Chris Jenkins with 51 yards on one reception and Gabe DeSouza with 37 yards on 5 receptions.

Defensively, Gregory Silvia (Coventry, R.I.) led Curry with 7 tackles in the win, 4 of them solo. James Nyamwaya (Andover, Mass.) recorded 6 tackles, 1 solo, and was credited with half of a sack.

The Colonels return to the gridiron next Saturday against the University of New England. Kick-off is set for 1 PM on Katz Field on the campus of Curry College.
