Baseball Falls Short Against Lakeland

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Curry College baseball continued its Spring Break road trip, losing both games of a non-conference collegiate doubleheader against Lakeland at Lake Myrtle Park Field.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to an overall record of 3-3 and a record of 2-3 in Florida.

GAME ONE: Lakeland 8, Curry 3

After going down by four runs in the first two innings, the Colonels attempted to claw their way back into the game, starting in the third inning when Reegan Thomas (Standish, Maine) singled up the middle of the infield to score a run and put Curry on the board.

The Colonels scored another run in the following inning when Nick Columbano (Commack, N.Y.) put the ball in play with runners at second and third to pick up an RBI and cut the Muskies lead to two (4-2).

Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) put the Colonels within one run of the Lakeland lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to center field, but a three-run bottom of the inning by the Muskies put the game out of reach for the Colonels.

GAME TWO: Lakeland 8, Curry 7

After letting up two runs in the top of the first, Curry got one back in the bottom of the inning when Erik Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) hit a hard ground ball that was mishandled by the third baseman, which allowed Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) to score from third.

The Colonels' offense opened up in the third inning, posting five runs off of RBI singles by Columbano and Zachary McCarthy (Plympton, Mass.), a walk by Drew Fagala (San Antonio, Texas), and a sacrifice fly from Heggs to give Curry a 6-3 advantage.

After a sac fly RBI by Kyle Doolin (Stoughton, Mass.) in the bottom of the fourth gave the Colonels a 7-4 lead, the Muskies chipped away at the advantage and tied the game at 7-7 to send the game into extra innings, which they ultimately won.

Curry College enjoys a day off before returning to Spring Brek action against St. Scholastica for a doubleheader, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
