Baseball Sweeps Martin Luther to Open Play in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Curry College opened up its Florida road trip by sweeping Martin Luther College in a non-conference collegiate baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park Field.

Game One: Curry 18, Martin Luther 15

After a scoreless opening inning, the Knights struck first, posting five runs in the top of the second. The Colonels answered with a five-run inning of their own, which included an RBI double by Kyle Doolin (Stoughton, Mass.), an RBI groundout from Cam Barry (Manchester, Conn.), and an RBI single to left field by Reegan Thomas (Standish, Maine). Erik Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) capped off scoring in the inning with a single that drove in a pair of runs to tie the game at 5-5.

The Colonels picked up two more runs in the bottom of the third when Zachary McCarthy (Plympton, Mass.) drove in a run off a groundball to the shortstop. Barry picked up another RBI a few batters later with a single to cut the Martin Luther lead to one (8-7).

Leonard opened the fourth inning with a bang, smashing a solo home run to right field. Drew Fagala (San Antonio, Texas) joined the list of batters to drive in runs when he singled to centerfield to drive in a pair of runs and give Curry its first lead of the game (10-9).

The Colonels posted another five-run inning, starting with a triple by Aidan Finnegan (Amsterdam, Netherlands) to drive in a pair of runs. Doolin singled to right field to drive in another run, followed by an RBI double by Fagala to put Curry on top 15-9.

Tommy Marshall closed out scoring in the game with a towering three-run home run to right field to give the Colonels some breathing room.

Game Two: Curry 13, Martin Luther 0

Curry kept the foot on the gas pedal in game two, scoring two early runs in the top of the first inning off a single by Marshall, who later scored on a wild pitch.

The Colonels picked up three more runs in the third inning off an RBI single by Devin Grove (Cheshire, Conn.), a pair of sacrifice flies by Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) and Nick Columbano (Commack, N.Y.).

Doolin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run for the Colonels in the fourth inning, followed by a two-run single by Higgs, who later scored on a wild pitch to give Curry a 9-0 advantage.

The second game ended almost identically to the first with Marshall crushing a three-run homer over the right field fence. Heggs singled to right field on the following at-bat to end scoring for the game.

Curry College continues its Florida road trip with a single game against Rutgers-Newark on Sunday, March 10th, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
