Colonels Drop Pair to Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Curry College Baseball team was swept by Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England on the road Saturday afternoon.

With the losses, Curry moves to 9-20 overall on the season and 3-9 in the CCC.

Game 1: Curry 1, WNE 10

The first game of the conference matchup saw the Colonels strike first with Ryan Goonan (Ryanham, Mass.) scoring on a fielder's choice to grab Curry an early 1-0 lead.

Ten unanswered runs from the hosting Golden Bears through the bottom of the seventh granted Western New England a 10-1 victory over the Colonels in the opening matchup of the afternoon doubleheader.

Curry's Ryan Goonan tallied two hits and one run on four at-bats to pace the Colonels.

Game 2: Curry 7, WNE 11

Western New England kept their bats hot into the second matchup, notching five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Curry responded in the top of the second, Devin Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) notching an RBI double to left-center, pushing James Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) in to score. Grove would notch a run on a Ryan Goonan single through the left side. Curry senior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) pushed the inning's third run in for the Colonels on a double to left field, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of the Golden Bears.

Six additional runs through the fourth inning from the hosts pushed the Golden Bears to an 11-3 lead.

The top of the sixth inning saw Curry's Tino Gagliardi (Cromwell, Conn.) notch an RBI and a run to bring the Colonels within six runs of the hosts.

The Colonels marked two additional runs in the top of the eighth inning but were still unable to catch the lead acquired by the Golden Bears, falling to WNE 11-7 in the second matchup Saturday afternoon.

Curry will be back in action Tuesday afternoon as they host Roger Williams University for a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup set for 3 PM.
