Baseball Falls Short Against Anna Maria

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Curry College baseball team suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Anna Maria College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

With the defeat, Curry drops to 3-9 overall on the season.

The Amcats scored once each in the first, second, and fourth innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Colonels got on the board. Sophomore Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) broke the ice for the Colonels in the top of the fifth, driving in graduate student Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Anna Maria scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and once in the bottom of the sixth to open up its largest lead of the afternoon at 6-1.

Curry made a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, plating three runs to get the contest within two at 6-4. Marshall's second RBI single of the game opened the scoring in the inning for the Colonels, followed by a Brandon Polanco (Brownsville, N.Y.) run on a passed ball and a Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

The rally fell short however, as the Colonel bats went silent in the eighth and ninth and Anna Maria earned the victory.

Marshall and Jaume were the only two Colonels to finish the game with multiple hits, as Marshall went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Jaume went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore Drew Fagala (San Antonio, Texas) took the loss on the bump for Curry, allowing two earned runs in three innings pitched.

Next up for the Colonels, they will open Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday by hosting a doubleheader against Gordon College at Jack Vallely Diamond. First pitch in game one from Milton is slated for 11 a.m.
