Colonels Split With St. Norbert in Spring Trip Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Curry College baseball team split its first doubleheader of the season Saturday as it began its Florida Spring Break trip at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park. Curry defeated St. Norbert 9-5 in the first game of the day, before falling 26-1 in the second matchup of the afternoon.

With the split, Curry moves to 1-3 overall on the season.

 

Game 1 - St. Norbert 5, Curry 9

A strong showing from graduate pitcher Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) granted the Colonels the defensive presence to hold off St. Norbert in the opening matchup of the day's doubleheader.

Curry College tallied its first runs of the game in the top of the first. Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) notched an RBI single to bat in Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.). Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) pushed the Colonel lead to 2-0 on a single through the right side to drive in Brandon Polanco (Brownsville, N.Y.).

St. Norbert tallied their first run in the bottom of the second on a Sebastien Dubois solo home run, bringing the Curry lead to just 2-1. 

The Colonels continued scoring through the top of the fifth, Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) scoring on a Kyle Doolin (Stoughton, Mass.) groundout to grab Curry a 9-2 lead. 

St. Norbert closed in on Curry's lead in the bottom of the seventh, Caden Uhlenbrauck singling to center field to bat in Tyler Pigeon, bringing the score to 9-5 in favor of the Colonels. Curry's Ryan Kirkpatrick (Cumberland, R.I.) would close out the contest from the mound, holding back any further scores by St. Norbert, sealing the first win of the spring trip for the Colonels. 

On the hill, graduate student Jack Needham was awarded the win with 6.1 innings pitched and eight strikeouts.

 

Game 2 - Curry 1, St. Norbert 26

A dominant first inning for the designated home team, St. Norbert, saw the Colonels fall behind 15 runs. 

St. Norbert would push their lead to 26-0 through the top of the seventh. 

Curry's Tim Porter (Hanover, Mass.) notched the sole Colonel RBI of the matchup, reaching first on a fielder's choice to drive in Tino Gagliardi (Cromwell, Conn.). 

Curry will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, continuing its Florida Spring Break trip with a contest against SUNY Canton in Auburndale, Fla. at 2:30 PM.
