Baseball Sweeps Western New England on Senior Day

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College baseball team finished out the regular season with a pair of wins over Western New England University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Jack Vallely Diamond.

With the victories, Curry closes out its regular season with an overall record of 15-21 and conference record of 5-11.

Before game one, Curry honored its 12 seniors and graduate students with a special Senior Day ceremony. Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.), Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.), Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.), Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.), Jacob Bishop (East Taunton, Mass.), Eric Sennott (Odessa, Fla.), Phil Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Michael Mulrean (South Easton, Mass.), Joseph Persechino (Torrington, Conn.), Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.), Nick Kavrakis (Southwick, Mass.), and Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) were joined on the field by their friends and families.

 

Game 1 - Curry 4, Western New England 0

Needham threw a Senior Day gem in game one to lift the Colonels to the shutout victory. The senior threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four for his third win of the season.

Curry opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting up a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice to put the Colonels on top by a run, before later scoring on an error by the left fielder.

The Colonels extended their lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Brandon Polanco (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the frame by scoring on a wild pitch, before Jaume roped an RBI single to right field to extend the lead to four.

Wensley came into pitch in relief in the eighth, closing out the contest by throwing two shutout innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout.

Offensively, Curry was paced by three hits by Jaume, while Leonard and Fosher each finished game one with a pair.

 

Game 2 - Curry 6, Western New England 3

Curry rallied from a two-run deficit in game two to secure the sweep.

Western New England scored twice in the top of the first inning, but Curry cut the lead in half on an RBI groundout by freshman Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) in the bottom of the third.

The Golden Bears got the run right back in the top of the fourth on an RBI infield single, but Curry scored again in the bottom of the frame to draw within one. Sennott drove in a run with an RBI single down the left field line.

Curry took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leonard drove in the tying run with an RBI double over the head of the right fielder, before scoring on the second RBI single of the contest by Sennott.

In the bottom of the seventh, Curry added some insurance on a two-run single by Leonard to extend the lead to 6-3.

Freshman Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) grabbed the win for Curry, throwing eight innings in relief, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Five Colonels had two hits to pace Curry offensively, led by Leonard, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

 

Curry's postseason fate is currently to be determined based on games currently under way across the CCC.
