Baseball Sinks Mass. Maritime

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College baseball team dropped the Massachusetts Maritime Academy 11-3 Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Jack Vallely Diamond.

With the win, Curry runs its winning streak to three games and improves to 6-3 overall.

The Buccaneers took the lead early on in the top of the first on an RBI double, but Curry quickly erased the lead when junior Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) spanked a solo home run over the right centerfield wall to level the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Curry put up a three-spot, thanks in part to a solo home run from sophomore Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.), his second long ball in as many days and third of the season. Later in the inning, sophomore Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) drove in two more runs for the Colonels with a single to centerfield.

Curry scored once more on a Hanlon RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth inning, but put the game away by putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 9-1. A bases-loaded hit by pitch from freshman Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) opened the scoring in the frame, followed by a two-run base hit by Goonan and a bases-loaded walk by senior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.).

In the sixth, Goonan completed a hat trick of two-run singles, closing out a six-RBI game and putting Curry ahead 11-1. The Buccaneers notched a pair in the top of the seventh, but their rally fell far too short as Curry sealed the 11-3 win.

Freshman Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) got the start for the Colonels, but got a no-decision for not hitting the five-inning requirement to earn the win. He threw four innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four. The win went to reliever Colman Dyer (Sterling, Mass.), who threw three innings allowing two earned on two hits. Freshman Bobby Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) sealed the win by allowing no hits and no runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Curry wll continue its lengthy homestand with a Wednesday afternoon contest against Bridgewater State. First pitch from Vallely Diamond is scheduled for 3 p.m.
