Colonels Bounce Past Kangaroos

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Curry College Baseball team defeated SUNY Canton 5-3 in the final game of their Florida Spring Break trip.

With the win, Curry improves to 4-3 overall on the season.

The morning matchup saw no scoring in the opening five innings. The Kangaroos began scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field from Zach Miner, batting in Frank Nieto. Two more scores in the top of the sixth from SUNY Canton pushed the Kangaroos to a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh.

Curry found themselves with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth following three consecutive walks. Two more walks would permit David DiCicco (Winthrop, Mass.) and Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) a safe trip to home, bringing the Colonels within one score of the Kangaroos.

With no outs on the board and bases loaded, Curry's James Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) doubled to left-center batting in Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) and Brandon Polanco (Brooklyn, N.Y. ) to give the Colonels a one-run lead.

Curry solidified their lead on a sacrifice fly to left field from Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.), sending in Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) for the final score of the matchup.

The Colonels would take the contest by a final score of 5-3 in Auburndale, Fla.

Curry's starting pitcher Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) threw four shutout innings in the matchup, allowing just two hits. Freshman relief pitcher Drew Fagala (San Antonio, Texas) was credited with the win, recording 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Curry graduate student Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) was credited with the save, closing out the contest with a shutout ninth inning.

Curry gets back out on the field Sunday as they host the Dean College Bulldogs at 3 PM.
