Colonels Down Scarlet Raiders in Season Opener, 8-1

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Curry College Baseball team took down non-conference opponent Rutgers-Newark 8-1 Sunday evening in their first contest of the regular season.

With the win, Curry kicks off their young season with a record of 1-0. With the loss, Rutgers-Newark continues their season at 5-3.

The opposing Raiders struck first in the contest with an Armando Alvarez RBI double, sending teammate Robert Gonzalez in for the only score they would see all evening.

Rutgers-Newark would hold that one-run lead until the fourth inning as Curry's Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) doubled down the left-field line, sending Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) in for the Colonel's first in the scoring column. Heggs would arrive safely at home following a David DiCicco (Winthrop, Mass.) ground-out to second, giving Curry the lead in the top of the fourth.

Two innings later, the Colonels added five more runs on three hits, extending their lead to six. Curry's DiCicco batted in Hanlon for his second scored run of the evening, and a clutch shot down the left-field line from Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sent Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) and Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) safely into home.

Curry's Peralta tallied one final run to the score with a solo homer to right-center (the catcher's first collegiate home run), capping the Colonels' dominant victory over the Scarlet Raiders at 8-1 Sunday evening.

The Colonels were paced by Peralta who finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run. Curry's Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) led from the mound, tallying 5.1 innings pitched with five strikeouts.

The Colonels get back out on the field on a quick turnaround as they take on Central (Iowa) and SUNY Poly at 9AM & 3PM Monday.
