Baseball Falls Twice to Visiting Roger Williams

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team lost a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contests to Roger Williams University at the Jack Vallely Diamond on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks took game one, 3-0, and slugged past the Colonels, 14-0, in the finale. Roger Williams moved to 11-4 on the season and 6-2 in conference play, while Curry dropped to 1-7 in league play and 3-8 overall.

Game One – Roger Williams 3, Curry 0

Roger Williams got on the board in the first following a sacrifice fly to center field from senior George Somers (Lake Hopatcong, N.Y.), which was deep enough to score graduate student Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

The Hawks added one in the sixth on a solo shot to center field from senior Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to push the score to 2-0.

The final run of the contest came in the seventh by way of a senior Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) single to left field. Classmate Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) came home to make it a 3-0 game, the eventual final.

Jenkins went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the way for Roger Williams. Senior Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) registered the lone hit for the Colonels.

Junior Kyle Schaefer (Madison, Conn.) was credited with the win on the bump, tossing a complete game one-hitter. He walked one and fanned three to move to 2-0 on the season. Junior Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Game Two – Roger Williams 14, Curry 0

The Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the nightcap, tacking five runs on the Colonels in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, graduate student Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) drew a walk to bring home Cedeno. Following a pitching change, junior Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) singled to center field to bring around Jenkins. Sophomore Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) delivered a two-out double to center to plate Hobin and Roth to extend the lead to 5-0.

Roger Williams pushed the gap to 9-0 in the fourth. Gulino singled to right field to score junior Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Cedeno singled to left center, scoring Gulino and Massaro, and Somers singled to right field to plate Cedeno.

The Hawks added five more in the sixth to end the game, which would end the game after seven innings in the 14-0 final.

Graduate student Justin Garcia (Foxboro, Mass.) (2-0 overall) earned the win in 6.0 innings of work, allowing one hit with three walks to go along with 10 strikeouts.

Freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) led Curry at the dish, going 1-for-2. Junior Michael Mulrean (Easton, Mass.) (0-2 overall) didn't make it out of the first inning, surrendering four runs with three walks.
