NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College baseball team was swept by Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The Seahawks captured game one in walk-off fashion 9-8 and took game two by a final of 8-3.

Game One – Salve Regina 9, Curry 8

The Colonels were the first to get on the board in game one when senior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) knocked a two-run homer to left to put Curry up 2-0.

Salve Regina had the answer in the home half of the frame, coming back with four runs of their own. Senior Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) lined out to center, which was deep enough to score classmate Madden Ward (Clinton, Conn.). In the next at-bat, freshman Michael Breen (Auburn, Mass.) hit a two-run homer to center to make the score 4-2.

The Colonels chipped away at the deficit in the top of the third by adding one. Junior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) to touch home.

The Seahawks came back with one of their own in the fourth as graduate student Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) singled up the middle to bring Zach Barlok (Cheshire, Conn.) around to score.

Curry had a big fifth inning, plating five runs on three hits, while benefiting from two Salve Regina errors. Keller got things started with an RBI single up the middle and junior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) later scored when he crossed home thanks to a wild pitch. The offensive output continued in the frame when freshman Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled to short, which helped bring Keller around. Junior Eric Sennott (Odessa, Fla.) closed the frame out with a two-RBI single to left to pull the Colonels in front, 8-5.

Salve Regina tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the one-run victory. Breen doubled down the left field line to drive in one and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) would drive in the game-winning runs with a walk-off double to center to give the Seahawks the 9-8 win.

Junior Holden Ferrari (Dover, Mass.) was credited with the win, tossing one inning and striking out three. Junior Nick Kavrakis (Southwick, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits with one walk.

Game Two – Salve Regina 8, Curry 3

Senior Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) started game two with a lead-off home run to left field to give Curry the early 1-0 advantage.

The Seahawks pulled even in the third on an RBI single from Ward, which brought around junior Jared Beniers (Abington, Mass.). Junior Sean O'Malley (Darien, Conn.) homered to center in the fourth to give Salve Regina its first lead of the contest.

The Colonels would get the lead right back in the sixth. Jaume reached on an error with two men on, allowing Sennott to score. Two batters later, Curry would benefit from another Seahawk miscue and Jaume would come around to make the score 3-2.

Salve Regina recorded the remainder of their runs in the home half of the seventh frame as they would come away with the 8-3 win.

Junior Zach Lopez (New Canaan, Conn.) was credited with the victory on the hill, going three innings. He allowed three hits and fanned three. Freshman Aaron Diaz (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) was given the loss, surrendering six runs (all earned) on five hits with one walk.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday, March 28 at the Jack Vallely Diamond for a doubleheader starting at 9:00 a.m.
