Griffin's Gem Highlights Baseball's Split With Gordon

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with visiting Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond. With the split, the Colonels move to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the CCC while the Fighting Scots sit at 8-10 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Game One: Curry 3, Gordon 0

Curry picked up its first shutout victory of the season behind a complete game from David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.). The senior went the distance, only allowing two hits while striking out 13. During the contest, Griffin would pick up his 200th career strikeout.

The Colonels jumped on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) doubled to right field to score Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.), Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.), and Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.). The two-base knock proved to be enough as Gordon was only able to muster one hit for the rest of the contest.

Oliveira led the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish while Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) paced the Fighting Scots with two hits in three plate appearances. The loss was credited to Derek Hudson (Hudson, N.Y.) as the junior went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked one to fall to 1-3 on the campaign.

Game Two: Gordon 1, Curry 0

Gordon was able to respond and return the favor in the nightcap, blanking the Colonels 1-0.

The Fighting Scots got the lone run of the ballgame in the second inning after John Lagerfeldt (Stratford, Conn.) doubled to center field to score Erik Gauer (Wayland, N.Y.) from third. Curry was limited to one hit for the remainder of the contest after the first inning.

Oliveira and Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) paced the Colonels in game two with a hit apiece. Hodge led Gordon once again with a 2-for-4 performance.

Joe Pedulla (Monroe Township, N.J.) was awarded the victory, tossing a complete game. He only surrendered two hits while walking one and striking out six. Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) was credited with the loss, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out six.

Curry will return to the diamond on Sunday, April 8 for a home doubleheader against Endicott starting at noon. Gordon will next play on Tuesday, April 10 at home against Anna Maria at 3:30 p.m.
