Baseball Falls To UMass Boston In Non-Conference Play, 15-3

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Curry College baseball team dropped a 15-3 decision to non-conference opponent UMass Boston on Monday. With the win, the Beacons improve to 4-1 while the Colonels fall to 2-6.

UMass Boston opened the game scoring in the top of the second. Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) got on base with a double to center and then Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) came up to the plate to single. The single drove in Fowler to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead.

Curry answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second. Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) got on by way of a walk and then Michael Moreau (Marshfield, Mass.) singled to right center to send Jenkins to second. After a strikeout to put one out on the board, Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.) stepped up to the plate and knocked a two-RBI to left center to give the Colonels a 2-1 lead.

The Beacons next got on board in the fifth when they put up 13 runs on 10 hits while being helped by one error by the Colonels.

Curry got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jenkins flied out to left for a sacrifice fly to drive in Jalen Benoit (Bristol, Conn.).

UMass Boston tallied one more run in the contest in the seventh. Nick Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) doubled to center which drove in Eddie Reilly (Quincy, Mass.) to close out the scoring.

LoPriore led the Colonels with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI's. Moreau pitched in two hits while Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.) and Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) added one hit apiece.

Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) paced the Beacons with three hits. He also added two runs batted in and two runs scored. 11 other UMass Boston players recorded at least one hit.

Steve Witkowski (Pittsfield, Mass.) picked up the win on the hill for the Beacons. He tossed one inning and gave up one run while striking out one and walking three. Robert Reedy (Cumberland, R.I.) was credited with the loss for Curry, going one inning while giving up three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one.

Curry will next play Tuesday against St. Norbert College at Lake Myrtle Park Field #6 at 3:30 p.m. UMass Boston battles SUNY Oswego on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Auburndale, Fla.
