Third-Seeded Baseball Remains Unbeaten in Tourney Action, Defeating #5 Roger Williams, 3-2

MILTON, Mass. – Third-seeded Curry College topped visiting #5 seed Roger Williams University, 3-2, on the second day of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Baseball Tournament  Friday afternoon in Milton.

With the victory, the Colonels improve to 21-12 on the season and will be the home team against #6 Salve Regina University tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Gordon College. The Hawks fall to 16-19 and will travel to defending conference champion and second seeded Endicott College for an 11:00 a.m. contest tomorrow.

The scoring began in the top of the first with junior Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) singling to right field to start things up. Senior Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) platted Baker with a double to left center, putting the Hawks up 1-0 after half an inning.

It wasn't again until the top of the fifth inning when junior Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) doubled to right with one out. Baker followed reaching on an error on the second baseman freshman Will De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) and Timothy came around to score making the score 2-0 after four and a half in favor of Roger Williams.

Curry responded in the bottom of the sixth with senior Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) started things with a single to right field. Junior Phillip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) brought Pizarro home with a double to left center, bringing the Colonels within one run of the Hawks.

Senior John Arens (Milton, Mass.)started things in the bottom of the eighth by reaching on an error on the shortstop. Pizarro followed with a bunt, advancing Arens to second and putting two runners on. Freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.) advanced both runners into scoring position with a groundout to the first baseman. Perez was intentionally walked bringing up sophomore Nick Crivello (Blackstone, Mass.) After freshman John O'Rourke (Falmouth, Mass.) pinch ran for Perez, Crivello drew a walk, bringing in Arens unearned. Senior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) followed with an RBI groundout of his own, giving Curry the lead with a score of 3-2.

Roger Williams couldn't get anything going off starting pitcher freshman David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) in the top of the ninth, and the Colonels sealed the victory.

Griffin went the distance for Curry giving up the only two earned runs on five hits and two walks while fanning five. Junior Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) also had a complete game for the Hawks giving up three runs only two earned on seven hits and four walks while racking up ten strikeouts.
